Waiting for Anya. Michael Morpurgo

This book is set in a small village in France that is invaded and occupied by German forces during World War 2. Outside the village lives an old lady who, with her son in law, is offering protection to the Jewish children that are escaping over the border into Spain. The book masterfully informs children about some of the horrors of war whilst at the same time painting a picture of hope and love. A warning though, do have tissues at the ready... the end of this book is a real tear jerker!
