Mean means average. When you are working with data in tables and charts, you sometimes need to be able to work out the average (or mean) of a set of data. You do this simply by adding the numbers together then dividing by how many there are. Look at this example:
Kelly got the following scores on her spelling tests over 5 weeks:
1, 2, 3, 1, 3 (oh dear, not very good at spelling)... to work out the mean...
1) I add the numbers together 1+2+3+1+3= 10
2) I divide 10 by how many scores I had... 10 divided by 5 equals 2. My mean score was 2.
