Of all the content taught for 11+ maths preparation, time is the strangest. Telling the time, converting units of time, using the 24 hour clock, reading from a calendar (and problem solving with calendars) and calculating time durations are all life skills and yet some children just find it so hard. Many times, a child is exceptional at calculations, knows their times tables off by heart etc... and yet time just confounds them. And so we start small. This week's learn by heart target is to 'know basic units of time,'
60 seconds= 1 minute
60 minutes= 1 hour
24 hours= 1 day
7 days= 1 week
28/31 days= 1 month
365/6 days= 1 year
12 months= 1 year
52 weeks = 1 year
10 years= 1 decade
100 years= 1 century
Below are some links to games that are all about different elements of time- it's worth checking that the children have these skills as they are not covered very much at school.
