Converting weight- whether grams and kilograms during baking or converting between kg and pounds/ stones when we are weighed- is probably the most common conversion used in everyday life. The following units are a mixture of imperial and metric measurements for weight. Children need to be able to convert directly from one unit to the another, they also need to be able to problem solve using these units.
1000 grams = 1 kilogram
1 kilogram= 2.2 pounds (lbs)
1 stone = 14 pounds (lbs)
Unfortunately, there are very few online games with which to revise this skill. For a practical activity, children could use a set of scales to record the different weights of items in the house, then convert them. If you are Christmas baking at the moment, this would be a wonderful opportunity to complete some really pratical maths: weighing then converting from one unit to another. If you are feeling especially mathematical, you could even scale your recipes up and down- calculating the ingredients needed for 4 buns, 8 buns, 16 buns by doubling etc.
