Sensational Shapes. Week beginning 29.09.25 YEAR 4

And now for something completely different.

Children should learn the names and properties of 2D shapes in Key Stage 1 however, the huge emphasis on calculations and number work often leads to a lack of shape, space and measures in class. This is another one of those skills- very much like telling the time- that is assumed and, therefore, always worth double checking! Children should know the names and properties of the regular 2D shapes listed below. They should also know that 'regular' shapes have all sides and all angles equal- they also have the same number of lines of symmetry as they have sides, for example, a regular pentagon has 5 lines of symmetry and 5 sides.

2D shapes that your children need to know: circle, semi-circle, equilateral triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon. I am sending a poster and crossword out via email, do check to see that it's arrived :)

Why don't you draw a poster of the 2D shapes and their properties to win a prize?!
