2D Shape Vocabulary. Week beginning 10.01.22

This week's target is one after my own heart- it's a multi-tasker. It is both the learn by heart target for maths AND the words of the week for English/ VR. This week we are learning 2D shape vocabulary. Some will already be familiar to the children, others will not. The best way to learn vocabulary is by rote learning and drilling: quiz the children in the car, over dinner and before bed. Have them write out the words and their definititions as many times as they can in 5 minutes then focus on the tricky ones- write these in bright colours and say them in funny voices. Say the definition, they shout the word then reverse and repeat. Again and again and again!

The children will be bringing home a list and definitions- these should be copied carefully into their word journals and revised. The words are as follows:

Polgyon

Regular/ irregular polygon

Triangles: equilateral, isosceles, scalene

Angles: obtuse, reflex, acute

Congruent

Diagonal

Bisect

Transformation(s)

To investigate for next time: adjacent, parallel, perpendicular.
