For the next few weeks, our words will be homophones. These are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings- like spelt and spelled. It is important that the children can recognise the common homophones and choose correctly which spelling to use- they come up very often in the spelling section of the English paper and so are worth learning.
Led- to be directed somewhere. 'Rita led me to the fruit and vegetable ailse.'
Lead- a metal. 'The old pipes were made of lead.'
Principle- core beliefs. 'The lady woud not lie, it was against her principles.'
Principal- the first. 'Lottie is the principal dancer at Nothern Ballet.'
Past- something that has happened already. 'Christmas is in the past now. Sad times.'
Passed- to move in a direction, around or beyond someone else. 'Sally passed Rob in the race and gained first place!'
The meanings are as important as the spellings so it is important to revise these words in full sentences. Why don't you have a competition to see who can make the silliest sentence using these homophones?
